We are all much more aware of our health and physical fitness after a year of the pandemic and lockdowns. If you had vowed to be healthier and fitter in 2021, but unsure where to start, we have a simple suggestion for you.
If you’ve spent the lockdown with Zoom cocktail hours and making frothy coffees at home, you can make the first step on the road to a healthier lifestyle by switching out some of your drinks for healthier alternatives.
Water
It may seem obvious, but on the whole, we do not drink enough water. Our bodies are 70 per cent water, and keeping hydrated will improve overall cell function, help rejuvenate dry and damaged skin, hair, and nails, and even help you lose weight.
Even if you think you drink a lot of water, you still might not be drinking enough. It is recommended that the average adult drinks a minimum of 2 litres of water a day. It might seem like a struggle, to begin with, but with practice, it gets easier.
Make it easier to get yourself in the habit of drinking plenty of water by buying a reusable stainless steel water bottle with a filter that has markings showing progress and reminding you to drink some water every hour.
This may even make drinking water into a game, encouraging a healthy habit in a fun way.
A Probiotic Drink
You will likely have heard the mention of probiotics, and the good they can do for your body. Probiotics are the ‘good bacteria’ that help balance out your body, strengthen your immune system, and aid digestion and gut health.
Probiotics naturally occur in fermented foods like kimchi and sauerkraut and cultured milk products like yoghurt or cottage cheese. You can also find probiotics in pill and powder forms, but a drinkable probiotic is more fun and flavourful to reap the benefits of these good bacteria.
There are a few probiotic options available.
Kombucha
Kombucha has become more well known over the past decade, becoming a staple in the health foods market. It is a fermented tea that contains live and active cultures, which is what that weird-looking stuff at the bottom of the bottle is.
It is described as having a robust and vinegar-like flavour and a fermented zing to it and is available in a wide variety of flavours. While its unique flavour has boosted its popularity, not everyone is a fan of the intense taste, but thankfully there are other ways to get your probiotics.
Tepache
Tepache is a fermented probiotic drink from Mexico. Like kombucha, it is also fermented and has all the goodness of probiotics packed into it.
Tepache is made from fermented pineapple, giving it a mellower, less-funky taste that more people find palatable and delicious.
Being made only from natural flavours, you’ll find that Tepache has about 40 per cent less sugar than kombucha, making it a healthier and arguably better choice for your probiotic beverage needs.
